Abstract Oxidative stress is a factor that contributes significantly to male infertility. It is defined by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting from its increase or decrease in the amount of antioxidants. The membrane of the sperm by having large amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids becomes susceptible to ROS action leading to occurrence of lipid peroxidation, resulting in structure and permeability changes, compromising the integrity of the genetic material, mitochondrial activity and the integrity of acrosome. To try to minimize these harmful effects caused by oxidative stress using antioxidants see being studied, including vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol). It is a non-enzymatic antioxidant activity of protecting polyunsaturated fatty acids in tissues against the occurrence of lipid peroxidation. Thus, this study aims to evaluate, through functional tests, the antioxidant effect of vitamin E on sperm in vitro incubated with oxidative stress inducer (hydrogen peroxide). For this purpose samples of seminal fluid from each patient will be analyzed after incubation with inducer and / or vitamin E. The spermatozoa are analyzed by functional tests: DNA integrity, mitochondrial activity, acrosomal integrity and oxidative stress, the presence of superoxide anion. | |
