Abstract

Varicocele, also known as testicular varicose veins, is considered a major cause of male infertility. This condition is the result of a malfunction or absence of the valves in the spermatic veins that have a retrograde blood flow, resulting in venous dilation of pampiniform plexus. Its effects involve hormonal dysfunction, sperm DNA damage, hypoxia and testicular hyperthermia, reflux of adrenal/renal toxic metabolites and increased reactive oxygen species in seminal plasma. Considering its impacts and high incidence, several treatments have been proposed to minimize and/or reverse the damage caused by varicocele, among them there are surgical interventions and antioxidant therapy, which aims to improve sperm parameters before and/or after surgery. In this context, the purpose of this study is to evaluate aspects of reproductive histophysiology, with emphasis on sperm quality of rats with surgically induced varicocele and the potential effects of treatment with chrysin. This flavonoid is found in high concentrations in honey, propolis and plant extracts, and besides having anticancer activity, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive and anti-aging, is known as a powerful antioxidant. Several studies report that this compound, besides having a great protective activity against the damage caused by oxidative stress, it has a positive impact on sperm parameters. (AU)
