Abstract

Due to the need to sanitize urban spaces, the State conducts interventions supported by legislation that will define the codes, such as the Postures Code, the Sanitary Code and the Construction Code, ensuring that minimum standards of hygiene required by the government were obeyed in the construction and use of buildings. However, with the use of regulations, the urban landscape transforms itself. This research aims to analyze the urban and architectural changes occurred in the city of Ribeirão Preto, by analyzing the architecture regulation in the period of 1889 (begginig of the Republic in Brazil) to 1934 (introduction of the Building Code " Arthur Saboya " to the city of Ribeirão Preto), and to compare the Postures Codes with the São Paulo State Sanitary Code of 1894 and the Construction Code "Arthur Saboya". Understand the relationship between architecture and urban space, and the impact of legislation in the city is important to comprehend these changes and how they occur throughout the studied period.
