Abstract

Suberin is a biopolymer found in the cell wall and which contains in the structure phenolics, glycerol and lipids. Due to its insolubility and impermeability is an important barrier to the transport of water, ions and gaseous compounds in plant tissues where it is found, such as the endoderm, the periderm and vascular sheath of C4 plants. In Saccharum spp., the cell wall of stem cells and is highly suberized, and similar to lignin, suberin is also an important factor in the recalcitrance of the biomass of this crop. Sugarcane has been used for a long time as a supplement for feeding the Brazilian cattle, representing an important and essential green forage during the winter. Thus, this project will make the characterization of the biosynthesis , transport and deposition of suberin in Saccharum spp., correlating the characteristics of the biopolymer with the digestibility of sugarcane used as animal feed .
