Abstract

This exploratory study aims to investigate the expansion of private education on the suburban areas of São Paulo, most precisely in the East Zone of the city. It is understood that the growth of this school market took place through the consolidation and diversification of the suburban areas, pointing towards the distinction/differentiation of behaviors and lifestyles within the popular groups (Bourdieu, 2008). Recent studies indicate that the working class has increased its consumer power from the 2000s on, including in relation to education. Nevertheless, it is our hypothesis that this phenomenon of private schools has been shaping itself since decades before the twenty-first century in this region. It is our aim to identify and analyze such expansion through the geographical and chronological survey of schools, as well as interviewing founders/managers of private schools to understand this schooling demand since the mid-twentieth century.
