Abstract

Recent studies suggest that the cerebral cortex is involved in two distinct pathways for the control of human locomotion: the first acts in the control of steady-state locomotion and the second one acts in the planning and modulation of walking on uneven terrain. As patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have impairments in both walking conditions, one might suggest that deficits in the cortical activity contribute to walking impairments in patients with PD. Thus, it becomes evident the need to investigate the activation of the cerebral cortex during walking in patients with PD. The aim of the current research project is to investigate the complexity of electroencephalography signals and the functional connectivity between different cortical regions in patients with PD and healthy individuals during free walking and obstacle avoidance. Participants will be invited to walk at their preferred speed on a 10 m long walkway in two experimental conditions: free walking and obstacle crossing. Dependent variables will include spatiotemporal measures of gait (GAITRite®) and measures of the complexity of electroencephalography rhythms (Wavelet Packet Entropy) and functional connectivity (Partial Directed Coherence) between cortical regions (prefrontal cortex, right and left sensorimotor cortex, central region, and occipital cortex). The current research project hopes to contribute to the understanding of the neural substrate of gait impairments in PD and, as a consequence, to guide the development of new procedures for treatment and rehabilitation.
