Abstract

This research project aims to develop a software tool for the automatic detection of the mid-sagittal plane (MSP) in 3D medical images. This task is very important, in neuroimaging area, for applications based on symmetry analysis between the brain hemispheres, such as in segmentation of gliomas and analysis of brain atrophy in Alzheimer's disease. In this study, the PSM detection will be based on a local measure of planar structure, calculated from eigenvalue analysis of local moment matrices of phase congruency that aims to enhance the longitudinal fissure, which is a membrane between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Quantitative analysis using 3D MRI images will be conducted to assess the performance of the developed method.
