Abstract

Introduction: Chronic respiratory diseases account for a large economic and social burden on individuals and society. Importantly, the burden of chronic respiratory diseases has increased worldwide. The volume of research on strategies to prevent and treat these conditions has grown substantially in recent years. Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines have great value to assist health professionals in specific clinical circumstances, but despite these being systematically developed they are also often variable in quality. Hence, it is important to investigate the quality of these guidelines to alert guideline users to where aspects of quality may be lacking in existing guidelines and to alert guideline developers about where the quality could be improved in the future. Objective: To systematically assess the quality of guidelines on chronic respiratory diseases indexed in the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro; www.pedro.org.au), using the second version of the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation Instrument (AGREE II). Methods: Four raters will independently assess all guidelines on chronic respiratory diseases indexed on PEDro using the AGREE II instrument. Means (standard deviation) for each of the six domains will be calculated for the pool of clinical practice guidelines. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC2,1) using data from all four raters will be calculated to evaluate the inter-rater reproducibility of the AGREE. Implications: The results can be used to alert guideline users to where aspects of quality may be lacking in existing guidelines and to alert guideline developers about where the quality could be improved in the future.
