Abstract

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common type of focal epilepsy in adolescents and adults, being responsible for two thirds of cases in this population. In most individuals the area of origin of the crisis is located in the mesial temporal lobe region (TLE). Approximately 11-42% of patients with TLE have difficulties to control the crisis and do not respond to anti-epileptic drugs; thus, for the treatment of these patients is performed surgical resection of mesial temporal lobe structures. It is obtained good control of seizures in 60-80% of cases. The two main surgical techniques used to treat TLE are temporal lobectomy and transylviana amygdalohippocampectomy. Due to the anatomical variability and difficulty in establishing accurate resection margins can have Temporal Trunk fiber injury as optical radiation, resulting in deficits in the visual field of the patients and their autonomy. This study aims to find patterns in the disruption of local optical pathways and correlation with the surgical technique used. Thus, it could be establish the safest technique for optical system and to propose a path that avoids this damage.
