Abstract

Physical exercise promotion is one of the main global goals of innumerous health and medical societies for preventing and managing noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCDs), being an important tool for the treatment of hypertension. Heated water based exercise (HEx) has emerged as a potential alternative to land based exercise (LEx) for the reduction of blood pressure (BP) of hypertensive patients. However, its acute effects on ambulatory BP and hemodynamic variables involved in the pathophysiology of hypertension has not been investigated in olderhypertensive patients.PURPOSE: To evaluate the acute effects of HEx versus LEx on ambulatory BP, arterial stiffness, endothelial function, and heart rate variability in older hypertensive adults.METHODS: 34 sedentary older hypertensive patients (age > 60 years), of both gender, will be submitted to a HEx, LEx and control (CON) session in random order (2 to 5 daysof interval between interventions) and will have 24 h ambulatory BP analyzed after eachintervention. Arterial stiffness, endothelial function and heart rate variability will also be analyzed before, immediately after and 45 min after each intervention. HEx and LEx sessions will consist of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise with intensity between relativelyeasy and slightly tiring on the 6 to 20 rating of perceived exertion scale. CON session willconsist of 30 minutes of rest in the sitting position. (AU)
