Abstract

Currently the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) has a high prevalence and a high economic and social cost. In this context, several experimental models have been proposed, aiming at the discovery of new therapeutic approaches. Accordingly, the therapy with Low Power Laser (LBP) is a relatively new effective therapy, with very low cost and no side effects. In this project we aim to study some parameters in animals with COPD undergoing therapies with LBP (15 days before the experiment with 1J, 3 J, 5J and 7.5 J/cm2). The protocol used for the induction of COPD consists in submitting C57BL / 6 mice for 75 days (2 times / day) to inhaled cigarette smoke. On day 76, the animals will be sacrificed for morphologic and functional analysis of the lung. We will study structural and functional parameters, such as the release of cytokines and chemokines (IL-1², IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, IFN-g, TNF-±, TGF-², KC) and accumulation of mucus and collagen. We are also interested in evaluating the suppression of NF-kB signaling as well as MMP-9 and MMP-12.
