Abstract

This study will evaluate the influence of the viscosity and frequency of application of solutions containing fluoride and stannous in the control of enamel erosion. Enamel slabs of 4mm x 4mm x 2mm, obtained from bovine incisors, will be used in this study. The slabs will be embedded in acrylic resin, flattened and polished. Adhesive tapes will be placed on their polished surface, leaving an area of 4mm x 1mm exposed to subsequent testing. The specimens will be then randomly divided into 18 experimental groups, according to the 3 study factors of the study, which are: experimental solutions (at 3 levels: 1. deionized water; 2. sodium fluoride; 3. sodium fluoride + stannous chloride); viscosity (at 3 levels: 1. low; 2. medium; 3. high); and frequency of application (1. 2x/day; 2. 1x/day). The specimens will be tested using an erosion-remineralization cycling model, consisting of 5 min immersion in 0.3% citric acid solution, followed by 60 min immersion in artificial saliva. This procedure will be repeated 4 times a day, for 5 days. The groups that will be treated with the experimental solutions 2x/day, will be exposed to them 30 min after the first and the last erosive challenges, for 2 min. The groups that will receive the treatment 1x/day, will be exposed to the solutions 30 min after the first erosion challenge, for 2 min as well. In the end of the cycling, the tapes will be removed, and the surface loss of the specimens will be determined with an optical profilometer. Data will be statistically analyzed, considering a significance level of 5%.
