Abstract

The Project aims at translating the comedy Clouds, by Aristophanes, according to the edition set forth by N. G. Wilson (2007), published by Oxford Classical Texts, with an introductory study. This project continues the scientific initiation research, financed by FAPESP (2012/04564-3). During this previous research, I finished the translation of the prologue, delimited by verses 1 - 274, and the study focused on rhetoric, entitled "The rhetoric comedy of Aristophanes: translation and study of Clouds' Prologue". The proposal of the scientific initiation research should not be much changed, but adapted and supplemented, due to the higher purpose: a master's project. Thus, I will finish the translation of the comedy as a whole, and the study will shall attention to the final part of this comedy. Attention shall be also, and mainly turned to the agon, in which the dispute between the strong speech (kreítton logon) and the weak speech (hetton logon) is personified. The latter speech is sometimes qualified metaphorically as leptós (subtle, ingenious), which will be examined carefully to characterize the rhetorical and poetic atmosphere of the time. This research is significant for understanding not only the Aristophanic poetic, but also the works from other comic authors like Cratinus and Eupolis as well as tragic authors, like Euripides. (AU)
