Considering the antidiabetic, antibacterial and imumoduladores effects of probiotics, their use for prevention and treatment of periodontitis in diabetic patients seems to be a promising strategy. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of systemic administration of the strain Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019 in ligature-induced periodontitis in diabetic rats. Seventy-six rats will be randomly divided into 8 groups: DM, DM/PROB, DM/PD, DM/PD/PROB, C, C/PROB, C/PD e C/PD/PROB. In groups PD, the right mandibular 1st molar of the animals will receive a cotton ligature that will be left in the same position during 14 days. In groups PROB, the strain HN019 will be administered orally to the animals for 4 weeks. In groups DM, the animals will receive an intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin in order to induce diabetes mellitus. In groups C, the animals will be systemically healthy. All animals will be euthanized 5 weeks after the start of the study. The jaws will be resected and histomorphometric analysis will be performed. The measurements will include evaluation of attachment loss on the distal root of the mandibular 1st molar and the area of no bone or periodontal ligament in furcation region. The data obtained will be subjected to statistical analysis (p<0,05).
