Abstract

This project aims to provide basic notions on both the theorical and numerical aspects of optical trapping forces exerted by light over lossless dielectric and negative index spherical particles under the ray optics regime, for which the diameter of the scatterer is much less than the operating wavelength. The theoretical analysis encompasses the analytical calculation of the optical forces associated with a single ray by taking into account the dielectric or metamaterial nature of the particle. Numerical simulations will then be realized in Matlab, Mathematica or in other available software, thus extending the theoretical analysis so as to include arbitrary-shaped beams (single focused Gaussian beams and Bessel beams).
