Abstract

This document presents the proposal for a research based on a seminal study of plasmonic metamaterials. The main goal of this study is to understand the phenomenon of optical cloaking from plasmonic layers over dielectric spherical particles whose dimensions are much smaller than the wavelength. To do so, the twelve-month-project has been organized as follows: (I) revision of fundamental concepts in Electromagnetism acquainted in undergraduate classes (II) study of Drude and Lorentz models and concepts such as plasma frequency and negative permittivity (III) basic notions of Mie theory and Rayleigh particles, and (IV) theoretical and numerical analysis of optical cloaking problems in terms of the Mie coefficients and scattering cross-sections. The particles are tacitly assumed to be simple from the electromagnetic point of view and shall have no losses. It is expected that, at the end of this project, the undergraduate student will be able and prepared to start advanced research in the field of metamaterials, in microwave and optics.
