Abstract

Bronchiectasis (BCT) is a pulmonary and systemic disease that leads to repetitive chronic inflammatory processes, with predominant symptoms such as cough, dyspnea and fatigue. These symptoms may lead to a sedentary lifestyle, which could result in reduced physical activity in daily life (PADL). Objective: To investigate the level of PADL in patients with BCT and compare it with a control group, and secondarily to assess the impact of dyspnea on PADL. Methods: Second sample calculation, 146 patients with BCT will be assessed, aged over 18 years and clinically stable. The control group will be 50 subjects matched for gender, age and body mass index obtained from a convenience sample. Exclusion criteria for both groups will be smokers or smoking history e 10 years-pack, unable to perform the evaluations for musculoskeletal limitations and morbid obesity. In addition, for BCT group patients with other chronic lung diseases will also be excluded. Individuals will perform spirometry, incremental shuttle walk test, they will respond to the Medical Research Council dyspnea scale and PADL will be evaluated by a pedometer. Hypothesis: Our hypothesis is that patients with BCT will present reduced PADL in relation to their healthy peers. Although plausible this statement, just a study published recently showed in 53 patients with BCT a high prevalence of physical inactivity in this population. Our study will raise the body of evidence from the literature on the level of PADL BCQ patients and will be the first to investigate the impact f dyspnea on PADL.
