There are several anti-inflammatory drugs available to medical and dental professionals to prevent or to reduce inflammation and pain, such as Ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug of moderate action. Topical application of such drugs has attracting attention due to its possibility to increase its concentration at site of action avoiding systemic adverse effects. Recently, poloxamer based formulations have been investigated as a promising drug delivery system for biomedical purposes. Therefore, the objective of the present study is to evaluate in vitro the permeation ability and mucoadhesive properties of thermoreversible gels for buccal release of ibuprofen aiming at oral mucosa topical use in Dentistry. Permeation studies will be performed in Franz type vertical diffusion cells across pig buccal epithelium; mucoadhesive properties will be evaluated in a texturometer. The present project will contribute to stablish more efficient and safety formulations with reduced side effects.
