Abstract

The worldwide usage of renewable energy sources has considerably increased due to incentives and lower costs. In last decade, the global installed capacity of solar photovoltaic (PV) generation has increased approximately 5300%, mostly connected to distribution circuits. This brings some concerns as those circuits were designed only to deliver the power from bulk (centralized) generation to end customers. In this context, utilities must understand the potential challenges due to the wide-scale adoption of PV systems so they can take actions accordingly. Some of the effects that start to appear on the medium and low voltage distribution networks, as the penetration of PV generation increases, include voltage rise and thermal overloads. To tackle this, particularly in large geographical areas, potential 'intelligent' solutions should coordinate the wide-scale management of residential PV system. The practical applicability of this, however, depends on the corresponding technical complexity and cost. Therefore, this project proposes the study of both aspects to determine a control strategy that can be beneficial to the distribution network (and even the system) not only to manage voltage and overload issues but critically to defer reinforcements otherwise needed.
