Abstract

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is the neuropathy with the largest incidence among neural injuries that affect upper extremity. One conservative treatment for CTS is the use of an orthosis of wrist in addition to tendon and nerve gliding exercise. The objective of this study is to investigate whether the nightly use of wrist orthosis combined with tendons and nerve gliding exercises could increase the score of the Boston questionnaire and the pinch strength, as well as changing electromyographic activity of forearm muscles in individuals with CTS after 45 days of treatment. Twenty four subjects between 20 and 65 years of age, of both sexes, with CTS will be recruited and divided into 2 groups: Group 1: use of a commercial wrist orthosis plus exercises performed at home (n=12), and Group 2: use of custom-made wrist orthosis plus exercises at home (n=12). The experimental procedure will have four stages, two of them to collect Boston questionnaire score, pinch strength and electromyography of forearm muscles data before and after 45 days of treatment. Data will be compared between groups to evaluate whether there was a change in the Boston questionnaire score, pinch strength and electromyography after treatment. Within-group comparisons will be done to compare whether there is a difference when the treatment is done with different types of wrist orthosis. Outcome variables will be used as response variables in a repeated-measures analysis of variance with group (commercial or custom-made orthosis) and time (before or after treatment) as factors in the model.
