Abstract

The mares get their higher economic value when its progeny stand out, this usually happens when the animal has reached advanced age. The high value of offspring encourages the use of these animals in assisted reproduction procedures, leading to many mares remain in reproduction even with advanced age and low rates of fertility. In this context Post-Mating Induced Endometritis (PMIE) becomes a disease with significant economic impact on the horse's market, since this is the main cause of decrease fertility in mares. Aiming to reduce the inflammatory response, recent studies have demonstrated increase in fertility of animals with PMIE when used immunomodulatory drugs. A modulator of the inflammatory response that has been largely used in veterinary medicine is the platelet-rich plasma (PRP). This platelet concentrate contains many growth factors important for tissue repair. Some studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of intrauterine use of PRP in mares for the treatment of PMIE. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of PRP in modulating the inflammatory response and fertility rates of susceptible and mares, in addition to evaluating the best time of treatment. Studies have shown that PRP is beneficial in the treatment of articular cartilage and tendon inflammations, modulating the inflammation and accelerates the tissue regeneration, for these reasons is believed to be effective in the control of uterine inflammation caused by the cover or IA. However, studies on the action of this substance in the uterus of normal and susceptible mares, as well as the most appropriate time to application the treatment are necessary.
