Abstract

The aim of this retrospective study is to evaluate the cephalometric and occlusal changes of orthodontically treated Class III malocclusion patients. The sample will consist of three groups: two experimental and one control group. The experimental groups will comprise patients treated at Bauru Dental School, University of São Paulo, Brazil, without (G1) or with extractions (G2). The control group (G3), matched by age and sex with the experimental groups, will consist of subjects with untreated Class III malocclusion from the Burlington Growth Centre, located at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, Canada. All patients shall initially present with a Class III malocclusion with an overjet smaller than 0mm. Cephalometric variable changes will be assessed on lateral cephalometric radiographs at the beginning (T1) and at the end (T2) of observation period. Concurrently, occlusal changes will be measured on dental study models at the beginning (M1) and at the end (M2) of observation period. The occlusal changes will be evaluated by the peer assessment rating (PAR) index. If the variables display normal distribution, intragroup comparisons will be performed with paired t tests and intergroup comparisons with one-way ANOVA. If the data are not normally distributed, Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis tests will be used, respectively.
