Abstract

Introduction: Treatment efficiency of Class II malocclusion with maxillary premolar extractions has been reported. Since the degree of root resorption is associated with the orthodontic mechanics, it is important to compare the root resorption, of protocols that use different mechanics to treat this malocclusion. Objective: To compare the degree of root resorption of the maxillary incisors in complete Class II malocclusion treatment with and without two maxillary premolar extractions. Material and Methods: The sample will consist of 60 patients with Class II malocclusion, divided into two groups. Group 1 will consist of 30 patients treated with maxillary first premolar extractions and group 2 will be composed of 30 patients treated without extractions. The initial malocclusion severity, treatment time, initial overjet and overbite, overjet and overbite treatment changes, and changes in vertical and horizontal inclination and displacement of the maxillary incisors with treatment will be evaluated. Periapical radiographs of the maxillary incisors will be used to assess the degree of root resorption using a scoring system. Lateral headfilms will be used to evaluate the changes in maxillary position and angulation with treatment. Normality of the variables will be evaluated with Shapiro-Wilk tests. According to normality, t test or Mann-Whitney U test will be used for intergroup comparisons. The comparisons regarding the degree of root resorption and its distribution will be performed with Mann-Whitney U and Chi-square tests, respectively (P<0.05). (AU)
