Abstract

The indications of tooth extraction in Orthodontics, as a way to resolve malocclusions are currently questioned because of possible risks for facial aesthetics. Based on this speculation, this study sought to determine if the dental extractions at long-term, are able to cause cosmetic damage on the front and side views of the face. The methodology will consist of a subjective evaluation of extra-oral photographs of the front, at rest and smiling, and sides of three groups of adults, made by orthodontists and lay people. Two test groups will be formed by individuals classified as full Class II division 1 malocclusion, treated at least ten years ago with extraction of four first premolars, in the first group and two upper premolars, in the second group. A control group will consist of individuals with normal occlusion without treatment. To check whether there is relationship between the facial aesthetics and the three study groups and the type of examiner, the analysis of variance with two criteria will be used, followed by the Tukey test. To observe whether there is interference of gender and age of the examiners in facial aesthetics, is applied to analysis of covariance. Through the Pearson correlation test, the following characteristics will be evaluated in respect of their relationship with the judged facial aesthetics: the proportion of facial thirds, a proportion of the lips together, gingival exposure and upper incisors exposure in smile, nasolabial angle and upper and lower lip projection. Finally, the ANOVA test will be applied to determine whether there will be differences between the clinical facial aspects observed among the three sample groups. (AU)
