Abstract

The staging of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) has changed over the last 10 years with the introduction of new outcome markers. However mortality according to the different staging system is not established and has not been evaluated in patients with COPD who live in Brazil. Objectives: To compare the mortality of patients with COPD, in two years, classified according to the criteria of GOLD 2003 and GOLD 2014 and assess the association between staging system and exercise capacity and life quality. Materials and Methods: Data from 125 patients with COPD classified according to the criteria of GOLD 2003 and the new model proposed by the GOLD 2014 will be evaluated. Patients underwent spirometry before and after bronchodilator, evaluation of gas exchange, body composition, quality of life, the intensity of dyspnea and exercise capacity. Patients or their families in case of death, were contacted every three months to check the frequency of exacerbations and / or hospitalization and in case of death the reason for the same. Statistical analysis will be performed descriptive data analysis. The survival of patients will be assessed by Kaplan-Meier survival curve and comparison of groups in each study severity rating will be performed by using the log-rank test. To determine the explanatory variables associated with the risk of death and the severity of COPD will be used Cox regression will be used significance level of 5% and the statistical package: STATA 10.0 (STATA Corp, Tx, USA).
