Abstract

The aim of this study in vivo is to evaluate the effect of the surface functionalization (SiO2) of a macroporous experimental implant with a surface that allows gradual release of drugs, on the osseointegration in mini-pigs. The groups will be divided as follows: 1 - experimental macroporous titanium implants with mesoporous silica-containing (Ti-SiO2); 2 - experimental macroporous titanium implants (No - SIO2); and 3 - Conventional Ti implants (Control). Six female mini-pigs Gottingen, with extracted last premolar and first molar of each mandibular side will be used. Healing was evaluated radiographically after 2 months. On the next step, the implants will be installed. Each animal will receive four implants (two in each hemi-jaw). After four weeks, the animals will be euthanatized. Standardized intraoral radiographs will be taken. Further, histomorphometric analysis will be performed in order to evaluate the effect of the surface functionalization (Ti-SiO2) of an experimental implant with a surface that allows gradual release of drugs, on osseointegration (deliver proof-of-concept of the osseointegration potential of Ti- SiO2 in vivo). Statistical analysis will be defined after exploratory data analysis. (AU)
