Effects of adjunctive use of a suitable diet for nephropathic patients in the pro-inflammatory response in dogs with chronic kidney disease

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease is a chronic and irreversible disorder characterized by structural or functional impairment of one or both kidneys. It affects more often elderly dogs and given its characterization, it requires several precautions that aim the improvement of the patient's prognosis. The dietary management, combined with drug therapy, is extremely important to minimize or slow the progress of the disease, including laboratory abnormalities and clinical manifestations and thus providing the patient a higher life expectancy and a better quality of life. The diet of the renal patient should include a number of key changes that help control both the inflammatory and oxidative process of the kidneys. Inflammation occurs as an attempt to contain kidney injuries; however, it can result in the release of a number of cytokines and chemokines related to complications of the disease, which can cause more damage to the kidney tissue. The aim of this study is to evaluate serum concentrations of cytokines IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-± in dogs with chronic renal failure in stages 3 and 4, before and after the use of dietary management, followed during the period of 180 days. 10 dogs from the service HOVET / FMVZ-USP will be selected by their clinical and laboratory manifestations, according to the International Interested Renal Society (IRIS). Blood samples for evaluation of serum cytokine concentrations will be carried out in the initial time (TO) and after 180 days of dietary management (T180), with the use of species-specific multiplex panels. Parametric and non-parametric statistical tests will be used to analyze the results.
