Abstract

The research project deals with the areas below the deck of the viaduct, called low. Currently discussed as residual spaces and associated with a state of degradation, low were not historically treated as territorial resources capable of public use. However, as in the metropolis there are entirely unoccupied spaces, there are frequently guided uses and occupations informal. Diverse groups they turn these areas their local encounters and activities, giving them not foreseen qualities, the transgressing of their original intended use. In analyzing the use and occupation in the low two viaducts of São Paulo, the research project craves to demonstrate the complexity of these territories, precisely because they are interstitial, build opportunities for the disposal of uses and occupations, not are other places to actually settle, providing empirical material to problematize the contemporary cities, not in the formal precepts of architecture and urban planning projects, but on the effective demands of public spaces.
