Abstract

This project proposes to analyze the short stories "A Stroke of Good Fortune", "A Temple of the Holy Ghost", "Good Country People", "A View of the Woods", "Revelation" and "Parker's Back", by the American writer Flannery O'Connor, considering the grotesque elements in them, under the light of the manuscripts that may be examined at Ina Dillard Russell Library, at Georgia State College and University, in Milledgeville, GA. The main objective is to contrast the manuscripts with the published versions of the short stories to see whether there have been any significant changes made by the author regarding the grotesque elements and the female characters. This research is going to be based on the works of the grotesque theorists Wolfgang Kayser, Mikhail Bakhtin and Marry Russo. In addition to the analysis of the manuscripts, this project seeks to gather more critical material on Flannery O'Connor's work that may contribute to the main Masters research that cannot be found in Brazil, such as the works of Bruce Gentry, Anthony di Renzo and Teresa Caruso, who have already studied the grotesque in O'Connor's work as well as reflected about the presence of gender roles in the stories.
