Abstract

The burnishing operation is performed with the purpose of decreasing the surface roughness and improving the mechanical properties of piece, such as increase of hardness and fatigue strength. The process is carried out without removal material, through of cold-working, which the burnishing tool promotes the material flow from peaks to valley on piece surface. This operation involves plastic deformation with consequent introduction of compression residual stress into piece surface layers. However, the forces can be enough highs for producing form deviations, affecting the piece surface quality. To minimize these problems, researches that use the laser as a source of localized heat has been made. Nevertheless, due to the high cost and floor space around the tool machine this method has its use restrict. In order to become the hot burnishing more practicable, in this work is proposed the use of a quartz resistance, which emits infrared radiation as source of heat. For measuring the efficiency of proposed method, both conventional burnishing and hot burnishing operations are compared. Besides the design and fabrication of the burnishing tool, important output parameters are evaluated, such as: as microstructure, residual stress and microhardness of ABNT 1045 steel when used different input parameters, such as burnishing force, piece rotation and number of passes.
