Abstract

The research is based on analysis of daily cases of violence publicized by Jornal de Assis (1920-1963) and A Notícia (1935-1949) between the years 1935-1939 in the city of Assis, São Paulo. Violence, polysemic concept, is one of the themes present in the police news that encompassed diverse range of life damage: homicide, suicide, rape, assault, defamation, kidnapping and domestic violence, to name a non-exhaustive list. This is to check how was the perception of this phenomenon, understand it from the selection of certain cases published in newspapers and track your outcome from the processes that led to crimes. The period covered by the survey stands out, internally, by a string of political events leading up to the New State in 1937 and the consequent curtailment of civil liberties, and, internationally, the tense situation that preceded the outbreak of Second World War. That were years of ideological radicalization, passionate commitments and uncertainties about the future. The unveiling of the paths followed by the press in interior city of which at the time was on the frontier of agricultural expansion, requires careful look at the political and socio-economic context of the region and may put in reflection the demarcation in the Brazilian press of jornalistic practices, as the sensationalism and "faits divers", important components for the suggested problem.
