Abstract Gas hydrates are solid structures formed by association of water molecules and low molecular weight gases. It is important to understand the mechanisms of formation and dissociation of gas hydrates in several areas, being currently the most remarkable those related to flow assurance of oil and gas in pipelines, water purification, capturing and sequestration of CO2 or even the possible use of these hydrates as an alternative energy resource, replacing oil and coal. However, experimental thermodynamic properties under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature are scarce for these systems. These data are necessary to test reliability of thermodynamic models. The objective of this doctorate project is to develop a methodology to build gas hydrate phase diagrams based on high-pressure differential scanning calorimetry. The influence of several factors such as water salinity, pressure, temperature, hydrate composition and presence of inhibitors in the system will be considered. In addition, the applicability of current thermodynamic models existing in the literature will be studied. If necessary, alternative models will be developed. (AU) | |
