Abstract

This postdoctoral project aims to perform a bibliographic and videographic review (Youtube) of the interviews, lectures and academic productions of Tariq Ramadan. Ramadan is a professor of Oxford University who advocates of a European and Islamic identity because, according to him, it is impossible to think about Muslims in Europe as foreigners. According to the author, these foreigners are French, English, etc., and Muslims. For him is essential to think about these two identities (or multiple identities). His thinking is a bridge between the reinterpretation of Islamic law and his approaches with the Western and secular democratic values. Ramadan identifies himself with the reformist Islamic thought that can be characterized as a return to the sources of the Qur'an and Sunnah, which suggests a "Salafi" line, but considering the context of each Islamic community. To have access to a wider material about Ramadan's academic production, this paper aims to demonstrate how the world of political Islam can be understood as consisting of "the intertwined modernity" and how this is forged in the reality that is based on the connections between global and local, understanding the concept of local as composed of different contexts, including Brazil.
