Abstract

Simultaneous use of different theoretical and practical models is a current tendency in family therapy (TF), known as integrative practices. The movement towards expansion and sophistication of integrative practices raises questions about coherence in clinical practice. The aim of this qualitative study is to understand how family therapists integrate different theories and techniques in their daily practice. The theoretical and methodological design of this study is based on action-research and social constructionists proposals. The participants of this study will be three to five family therapists who are currently working with family and couple therapy, as well as their clients and the researcher. Both researcher and therapist will work as co-therapists on the therapeutic process of a family or couple, and information of ten sessions will be systematically recorded. Subsequently, the therapists will have access to the sessions' records, and both researcher and therapist will have an interlocution conversation guided by the interest in constructing justifications for developed actions. During the research process, the researcher will keep field notes. The analysis will be carry out based on social constructionists proposals for research practice, and will construct meanings about integration in clinical practice with families and couples. This study can offer an alternative to the gap between practice and research in FT, favoring the study's impact and applicability.
