Abstract The current project was designed to determine differences between chronic hemiparetics and healthy control with respect to spatiotemporal and kinematic variables, temporal patterns of muscle activity, muscle activation and coactivation during two functional tasks (reaching and drinking a glass of water), considering motion features and applying Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) analysis as well as conventional statistical analyses. This cross-sectional study will include 13 chronic post-stroke and 13 healthy controls matched for age and gender. Spatiotemporal (velocity profile, smoothness of movement, movement time) and kinematic variables (3D joint angles of scapula, shoulder, elbow and trunk at point of achievement task, glenohumeral and scapulothoracic contributions to the global motion; interjoint coordination) during two tasks, reach a glass without touch and drinking a glass of water. Concomitantly, bilateral activation of the deltoid muscles (anterior, middle and posterior), trapezius (upper and lower), serratus anterior and pectoralis major will be assessed by electromyography during two tasks. The following electromyographic variables are analyzed: time muscular onset and offset expressed as a percentage of the motion cycle; sequence in time onset and offset; maximum, minimum and amplitude of activation; coactivation pectoral major/posterior deltoid and anterior deltoid/posterior deltoid. For statistical analysis of the EMG features the Two-Way Anova following Tukey post-hoc will be applied. Additionally, we will perform forward stepwise regression analysis when data are find to be normally distributed (to allow parametric analysis), or a non-parametric analysis if required (Mann-Withney with adjustment Bonferroni, and Wilcoxon). SPM will be performed to test null hypothesis by statistically examining upper limb kinematic (trunk, scapula, shoulder and elbow joints) and root mean square EMG (anterior, middle, and posterior deltoid, upper and lower trapezius, pectoral major, serratus anterior) data during time normalized reach phases (continuous waveforms), in order to verify the differences between the groups (paretic, non-paretic, non-dominant, dominant limbs).
