Abstract

Radical-mediated oxidations are expected to play an important role on photosensitized oxidations occuring in photodynamic therapy and cutaneous photoaging. Given the role of lipid photo-oxidation in these photobiological processes, in this project we aim to study the formation of lipid peroxyl radicals in model membranes, by using of BODIPY-a-tocopherol off/on fluorescent probes. These probes, which were developed by the group of Prof. Dr. Gonzalo Cosa at McGill University, show enhanced fluorescence upon reaction with peroxyl radicals. For that reason, they allow tracking the onset of lipid oxidation both by bulk measurements and fluorescence imaging techniques.
