Abstract

The study of particulate material in air pollution has been a major issue in air quality research, once these components can cause serious problems to the environment and humans. Among the numerous diseases that may be associated with pollution and climate conditions, it is Multiple Sclerosis (MS), consisting of an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system causing demyelination in neuronal cells. In this work, will be evaluate the correlation between meteorological variables, particulate matter concentrations in the air of the city of São Paulo and the clinical condition of patients suffering with MS between 2000 and 2014. With the support of the Multiple Sclerosis Brazilian Association (ABEM) , questionnaires will be applied in patients with MS to obtain prognostic and clinical data. In addition, air quality data and particulate matter concentration will be obtained from reports of air quality Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (CETESB). Expected results of this study are the understanding of which particulate material specifically affects patients with autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. In addition, the results of this work can help to correlate chronic exposure to pollution with the clinical aspects of MS patients. Once correlations are established between clinical features of patients with the meteorological variables and levels of MP, containment policies and management of pollution can benefit and improve the quality of life of patients suffering with pollution.
