Effect of Jussara ( Euterpe edulis Mart .) on the inflammatory and oxidative processes in skeletal muscle of not trained rats subject to exhaustive exercise

Abstract

Introduction: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production is a normal physiological process. During exhaustive exercise, there is an increased production of ROS, oxidative stress, and apoptosis index in the body. During and after the physical exercise practice, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-± plasma concentrations change and the intensity of exercise seems to be related to the degree of change of these cytokines. The jussara palm is a good source of unsaturated fatty acids, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, potassium, iron, and zinc. It also has an anthocyanin high rate, known for their high antioxidant effect. Currently, there is a strong recommendation to do regular physical exercise. However, high intensity carried out without training and orientation exercises could not provide beneficial effects to health and are even harmful in the short, medium, or long term. During exhaustive exercise, practice occurs in an unbalance between the levels of cytokines, proteins, and enzymes that regulate the oxidative and inflammatory processes. Objective: To elucidate the effects of juçara pulp supplementation before performing an exhaustive exercise session Methods: Male Wistar rats with 10 weeks will be divided into exercise group (E) and group exercise/juçara (EJ), supplemented by a week with a dose of 8,34g/kg/day prior to the exhaustive exercise protocol in the treadmill, and euthanasia performed immediately after exhaustion. Serum concentrations of glucose, triglyceride, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-±, and insulin; muscle glycogen concentration and degree of apoptosis and oxidative stress in the soleus and extensor digit rum longus (EDL) will be evaluated.
