Use of civil construction and demolition waste as non-plastic material to produce ceramic bricks

Abstract

In this work it will be adopted the method of incorporation of construction and demolition waste in the ceramic mass, for the production of solid bricks and blocks for pavements. The ceramic body is made of clay materials; as the clays in the region have high plasticity, require the addition of non-plastic material (such as sandy soil) to bring its composition and plasticity. The proposed experimental methodology is based on the use of the CDR as non-plastic material, whose predetermined composition is 50/30/20: ceramics, mortar and concrete. The CDR is crushed to a size smaller than ten (10) millimeters, which shall be mixed with clay, cement and water using a concrete mixer to homogenize the mixture. The particle size distribution of CDR and clay is obtained using sieves with mesh sizes less than 10 mm. The cement concentration will vary from 10 to 20% by weight of CDR and the water will be determined according to the plasticity of the mixture obtained. After homogenization, the material will be pressed using steel matrix and a manual hydraulic press, with 7 tf (seven tons-force) initial load; to obtain the cylindrical specimen (f = 30mm) with about 60 mm of height. The specimen will be prepared in triplicate to obtain average values with standard deviations. After drying time (24 hours) in an oven (110 ° C) the specimens will be weighed and measured to determine mass loss and linear drying retraction; and then they will be fired at temperatures between 900 and 1100°C using an electric furnace (EDG brand, model 3000). After the fired procedure, the specimens will be measured and weighed to determine weight loss and linear firing retraction. After these measures, compressive strength test, water absorption, apparent specific mass and porosity will be determined. These analyzes will help determine the properties of the ceramic material, for each composition and set its best application. Thus, it will evaluate the possibility of using the CDR in the production of a new ceramic product, giving another option to this waste as raw material.
