Abstract

This project aims at providing a comparative analysis between the profile articles produced by Jorge Andrade from 1969 to 1972 for the magazine "Realidade" and the literary portraits that Marcel Proust published in newspapers and magazines during the turn from the 19th to the 20th century. Although either profile articles and the literary "portraits" constitute genres with a long literary tradition, tracing back to authors from the French courts of the 17th century, we assume that they are not necessarily autonomous and that they contribute for the construction of characters in novelistic, memorial or even dramaturgic narratives. We will try to determine, in that sense, the role those literary portraits and profile articles played in the maturation of the artistic project of those two writers; in other words, what those journalistic articles were able to offer from the experimental and artistic points of view for their more ambitious and literary complex works, for the Marcel Proust's novel "À la recherche du temps perdu" and for Jorge Andrade's novel "Labirinto". In that sense, it is worth remembering that both writers did not resign from the production of journalistic articles concerning literary, artistic and social personalities of their eras. The participation of the dramatist Jorge Andrade in the magazine "Realidade" happened in the second phase of this publication, between 1969 and 1972, when the initial writing and edition methods were restructured in order to curb the censorship of the Institutional Act number 5 (AI 5). On the other hand, Marcel Proust writes for newspapers and publications that provide a substantial space for the literary portrait genre, aiming at fulfilling the curiosity of a readership highly interested in the traits that could distinguish artists, literary men or high-society mundane people. The common keynote of those profile articles and literary portraits is not only a plunge into the sentimental and psychological traits of interviewees, but also a strong emphasis on the memory, that can be noticed not only through a resort to the portrayed's personal experiences, but also to those of the writer, who writes the report.
