Abstract

This research project aims to study American science fiction in the 1940's through the works of members The Futurians, a group that existed between 1937 and 1945 in New York city. It tries to investigate the notion of future shown in the stories and how it relates with the context of the time they were written. To that end, 14 short stories from 5 authors of the group were selected. To analyze them, the relationship of text and context proposed by Dominick LaCapra is employed, which sees texts not as "pure" our "closed", but deeply linked with the context they are inserted in, the context they also help to create. The project also tries to contribute to the Brazilian studies of the United States, looking beyond the imperialist dimension of the country and bringing new issues to the fore.
