Abstract

Grinding is one of the most important manufacturing processes, especially when high surface qualities have to be realized or if hard materials have to be machined. Depending on the excellent properties of Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) abrasive grains such as high hardness, high thermal conductivity, and high wear resistance, CBN tools are widely applied to machine many materials. The superior grinding performance of CBN wheels in comparison to conventional abrasives has been demonstrated in various research studies and industrial grinding processes, in the most cases having a substantially lower total cost in long-term. The selection of the most appropriate and cost effective CBN grinding wheel has, in recent years, become increasingly complex owing to the availability of wide availability of abrasive materials. Therefore, an adequate selection makes a huge difference on the cost of the manufacturing process. This project will analyses the performance of two different CBN grinding wheels in vitrified bond that have a considerable difference of friability of the abrasive grains and will be used the process of cylindrical grinding on a nodular cast iron work piece. Results obtained from surface roughness, acoustic emission, roundness error, among others, will indicate the most appropriate grinding wheel for the process.
