Abstract

Animal communication is widely known for several animals groups especially in reproductive and territorial contexts. The advertisement call is the most common acoustic signal emitted by frogs males during its breeding season. This signal is usually species-specific, and of fundamental importance in the specific species recognition. Besides having direct applicability in the frog taxonomy, its acoustic traits have been used in macroevolutionary studies, in order to assess the possible processes that caused the patterns observed in living frog species. The genus Pseudopaludicola Miranda-Ribeiro, 1926 comprises 18 species occurring mainly in open environments of South America. Among these species, fifteen already have the advertisement call described. The main aim of this study is to improve, through an integrative approach, the taxonomic knowledge of the species richness of Pseudopaludicola. In addition, from the results obtained with the taxon model, contribute to the recognition of patterns and discuss the evolutionary processes that potentially acted in the evolution of phenotypic traits (call and morphology) along the evolutionary history of Neotropical frogs.
