Abstract

Quantitative sensory testing (QST) is a recent option in the assessment of masticatory myofascial (MMF) pain. However, the role of superficial tissue sensitivity is not fully explored yet. The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of cutaneous afferents in the mechanical somatosensory profile of subjects with MMF pain and healthy controls. This crossover placebo controlled clinical trial will comprise women with MMF pain (n = 20) and healthy controls (n = 20). The outcomes will be: a) reported facial pain intensity e b) 4 parameters of QST, which will be performed in the anterior temporalis and masseter region: 1) mechanical detection threshold (MDT), 2) mechanical pain threshold (MPT), 3) wind-up ratio (WUR) and 4) pressure pain threshold (PPT). The measurements will occur under the following conditions: a) baseline values, b) after the application of an anesthetic (lidocaine 4%) topical cream (experimental condition 1) and c) placebo cream (experimental condition 2). Multi-factors analysis of variance (ANOVA) with group (2 levels) and conditions (3 levels) and post hoc Tukey Honestly Statistical Difference test will be applied to the data considering a significance level of 5%.
