Abstract

The use of fluorescence in Cell Biology has contributed to expand the general understanding of the molecular basis of biological processes. Single molecule fluorescence, laser-induced fluorescence of biomolecules, tags and probes with non-linear optical properties, and fluorescent nanoparticles are state of the art in this field. In this PhD project, we propose to manufacture highly monodisperse fluorescent nanoparticles using betalains, a class of plant pigments, as reducing and stabilizing agents. The interaction of the nanoparticles obtained with animal cell lines will be studied by confocal microscopy experiments and the results will be analyzed considering structure-property relationships. Five groups of model-betalains will be semisynthesized and characterized (structure and photophysical and redox properties) for this study. Nanoparticles will be characterized by different techniques, including: electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray scattering and X-rays photoelectron spectroscopy. (AU)
