Abstract

The problem of consciousness remains one of the biggest philosophical problems, resulting in many hypotheses both reductionist and non-reductionist. In the current research we will adopt a neurophilosophical perspective to the consciousness study, i.e., that is not possible to discuss and analyze consciousness in a complete way by abstaining neuroscientific data. Therefore, we will make use of the theories on consciousness of the neuroscientist Antonio Damasio, a contemporary author and of fundamental importance to the development of our understanding of consciousness processes. Damasio was one of the first authors to break with tradition of considering only brain processes as fundamental to consciousness, considering, instead, also the importance of bodily states and the interaction with the organism with the environment in the consciousness studies, besides considering the fundamental importance of emotions and feelings in these processes, removing the conception of emotion as something belonging only to the subcortical areas of the brain and highlighting the cortical processes to the processing of emotions. In light of this, we use the works of Damasio seeking understand and analyze their theories about consciousness, discussing the contributions of the author to our philosophical understanding of consciousness as well as in position ourselves philosophically about his theory by analyzing and discussing positions left open by the author.
