Abstract

Introduction: International studies have ranked obesity in different anthropometric and metabolic phenotypes considering the metabolic profile associated with the value of the body mass index (BMI). In this new classification, it has drawn attention the phenotype "metabolically healthy obesity - MHO" when clinical and laboratory parameters are normal. Recent studies found that the prevalence of MHO in children and adolescents ranges from 25 to 68%. In Brazil have not been found, to date, studies that aimed to assess the prevalence of MHO in the pediatric population. Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of OMB phenotype in a population of obese children and adolescents and to investigate possible associations between this phenotype and the factors: sex, age, skin color, level of z-score for BMI, waist circumference, waist ratio stature, neck circumference, pubertal stage, physical activity, nutritional standard, type of feeding and age at onset of obesity. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study that will include all individuals aged 6 to 17 years, who attended the first appointment at the League of Childhood Obesity HC-FMUSP, between January 1st, 2009 and December 31st, 2013. It is estimated that there are 539 patients eligible for the study. Sources of information include the screening forms applied to patients in their first appointment and the electronic database of laboratory tests results. Expected results: It is estimated that 25% of the study participants will be classified as having the MHO phenotype. Knowing the prevalence and associated factors with obesity phenotypes in Brazilian population obese can contribute to international discussions on the subject.
