Effect of pre-brushing whitening mouthrinses in abrasive wear of the dental enamel

Abstract

The aim of this study will be to evaluate the effect of pre-brushing whitening mouthrinses in abrasive wear of tooth enamel. It will be prepared 80 specimens of bovine enamel with 3 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick. Initial profiles will be measured in contact profilometer. The specimens will be randomly assigned into 4 groups (n = 20) according to the type of bleaching mouthrinse applied, containing different active ingredients: PW Group: Whitening Plax (Hydrogen peroxide 1.5%, Colgate); Group LW: Pre-brushing Whitening Listerine (2% hydrogen peroxide, Johnson & Johnson); U Group: Ultradex (Chlorine dioxide, Periproducts Ltd); Group C (control): artificial saliva. The specimens will be immersed in the mouthrinses for 1 min, followed by 10 abrasion strokes of a toothbrush in a brushing machine (pressure 200g) immersed in diluted with toothpaste in saliva (1:3 weight / weight). The specimens will be washed in ultrapure water and immersed for 30 minutes in artificial saliva (pH = 7) for remineralization. Every three immersion cycles / brushing / saliva will simulate one day clinical use of rinses. In total it will be simulated 180 days of use and a total of 540 cycles will be performed. The final profile of the sample surface will be evaluated in profilometer and superimposed to the initial, measuring the enamel wear in microns. The data will be statistically analyzed to determine if the treatments modify or not the wear rate compared to the control. (AU)
