Abstract

Manganese (Mn) is one of the chemical elements that has been found most commonly on the earth, occurring mainly as pyrolusite (MnO2). It is used in the chemical industry, in the manufacture of potassium permanganate and hydroquinone, fertilizer and animal feed, paints, electrical resistors, fireworks, among others. Its conversion into soluble salts contributes to the accumulation in rivers and seas, being found as nodules in the oceans. When administered at low levels, it is an essential metal to the mammals' physiology .The main sources of Mn poison is mining and the steel industry. In the last couple of years, concerns about the effects of low doses of Mn, to which general population would be exposed through the ingestion of contaminated food and water, have been increasing. Although the brain is a major target tissue for Mn, the present research project aims to investigate possible reproductive effects caused by exposure to supra physiological levels of Mn, an issue relatively little investigated. It is known that accumulation of Mn may cause effects on semen quality (reduced sperm motility) and fertile ability of animals, besides morphometric changes in reproductive organs. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the risks of exposure to supra physiological levels of manganese on histomorphometry of testes and epididymis of adult male rats, correlating the studies with the use of oxidative stress biomarkers in these tissues, by analyzing the activity of catalase, and lipid peroxidation.
