Abstract

This proposal aims to obtain funding for a visit at the Laboratoire d'Océanographie de Villefranche-sur-Mer (LOV) in France, from 2016 Jul 1th to 2017 Feb 28th, under the supervision of Dr. Annick Bricaud. This submission is linked to the ongoing grant FAPESP 2013/16957-2, which purposes to understand how the optical properties (light absorption and scattering) of phytoplankton communities in Antarctica differ from other regions of the global ocean and how these changes govern the color of the ocean. The aim of my visit at LOV is to exchange ideas with very good researchers to clearly delineate publications content and broaden my collaboration network with LOV. The main scientific questions that will be investigated are: 1) What is the influence of photosynthetic and photoprotective pigments in the package effect of phytoplankton absorption in Antarctica? 2) What information does the particulate backscattering coefficient in Antarctic waters contain? An extensive dataset was collected during two cruises in the austral summers of 2013 (97 oceanographic stations) and 2014 (73) around the tip of Antarctic Peninsula, including 1) physical (salinity and temperature) and optical (beam attenuation, backscattering, irradiance) profiles and 2) nutrients, phytoplankton pigments and light absorption coefficients of phytoplankton and detritus at six discrete depths. The content and quality of two manuscripts that have been prepared during my post-doctoral research are expected to be improved during my visit: 1) Variability in the package effect of phytoplankton around the Antarctic Peninsula: influence of the photosynthetic and photoprotective pigments and 2) Variability in the bio-optical relationships around the Antarctic Peninsula: new insights of the particulate backscattering coefficient.
